William second married Janet [Orr]
MONTGOMERIE.
There is
some doubt that William #2 remarried. It has been
suggested that the William who married Janet Montgomery is
William #3 in this tree. We may never know the truth, but
the evidence is as follows.
II. William
ORR. was Portioner of Kame with his brother Robert.
Married Isobel AITKEN about 1630. They had at least one
son William. Isobel Aitken died in March 1651. - no
mention of William ORR II having married again.
III. William
ORR. On 11 April 1653 he feued from Lord Cochrane of
Dundonald the 20/- land of old extent on the east side of
the Lands of Caime and the 10/- land of old extent of
Barmochloch. On the same day in fulfillment of the
Marriage Settlement which had been arranged between him
and Isobel ORR widow of the late James MONTGOMERIE,
Portioner of Kerse, he gave sasine to her daughter and
future spouse Janet MONTGOMERIE of half the above lands in
liferent should she survive him. William ORR died in
February 1685. His wife Janet MONTGOMERIE survived him.
I read into
this that:(1) William ORR II married Isobel Aitken
(only).(2) William ORR III married Janet MONTGOMERY and
NOT (as a first quick reading of Hogarth Kerr might
suggest) Isobel ORR, James MONTGOMERY's widow. Isobel was,
according to my reading, Janet's mother, and William ORR
III's mother in law.
Concerning
William ORR IV's beliefs, Hogarth Kerr says:He adhered to
The Covenant and along with other Renfrewshire famers and
portioners he was summoned before the Lords in Glasgow in
1684. They refused to take the Test and were cast into
prison first in the Canongate in Edinburgh then in
Stirling and finally in the dreadful prison in Dunnottar
Castle where many of the prisoners died. Note - no
reference to the Tollbooth, unless it is one of the others
mentioned, by a different name. Finally on 26 Jul 1685 a
number of them including William ORR took the Test and
were liberated. The rest were transported.
A further
twist is that there were no Orrs in the named prisoners of Dunnottar Castle. Those
incarcerated there were first taken to Burntisland where
they were interviewed and offered the Test. It was
probably at this juncture the Lochwinnoch Orrs gave a
bond, took the Test and were released.
